I'm not sure where your anti-neoconservative stance comes from. I think that the whole movement has gotten a bad rap lately. Basically a neoconservative believes in the transformative power of democracy. Originally these were left wing guys like Kristol and Podhoretz who were disillusioned with the anti-American slant that was taking over the left in the 1960s. I think that these days the movement is most closely identified with the war in Iraq and is seen as a sort of ultra-hawkish stance but if you look at the movement as a whole you can see that it is not necessarily violent. Natan Sharansky writes in The Case for Democracy that the neoconservative ideal was indispensable in the toppling of the Soviet Union. The way in which the west began to tie economic aid to the Soviets to compliance with human rights norms was one of a number of factors that ultimately sowed the seeds of democracy in Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. I guess in the end I prefer this approach to foreign policy to the more cynical realpolitik that propped up guys like Hussein during the cold war.
Can't say I agree with you on that one. They deserve the bad rap. I don't care who they were originally, I'm opposed to who they are now. Good intentions do not equal good policy. Leadership should be held to a standard higher than this.
